Math Sciences IT is an IT unit at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Our focus is on specialized IT and technology support which complements services offered by our colleagues at CNS. We primarily service the schools of Mathematics, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Computer Science. Our team members have extensive knowledge of Linux, Unix, Apple OSX, and Windows server and client technologies, with an emphasis on tools useful to Mathematical Scientists. Math Sciences IT was the very first unit to implement production level Linux solutions at Wits, and to this day, we continue to be the strongest Linux advocates on campus. Beyond our large number of laboratories, we also manage additional resources such as computational clusters and a museum. Math Sciences IT also offers educational resources which complement our student's academic studies. For example we teach a series of Up-and-Running mini-courses designed to make students productive with software/hardware tools applicable to their studies. We also manage three Interest Groups which provides students with a structured environment with which to work on extra-curricular projects. |
